The Spider-Men share a common fighting slot style against enemies, being able to deal damage on the ground and in the air, yank enemies in any direction, and dodge incoming melee and ranged attacks. Between Peter’s new Symbiote abilities and Miles’ newfound blue bioelectric powers, each Spider-Man has their own unique set of skills that can be upgraded via an all-new individual Skill Tree. Our heroes share technology and train together, too, so a shared Skill Tree offers parallel upgrades for both. With Spider- Man 2, the developer has found what makes superhero stories worth telling (and retelling) and given its likable heroes the journey they deserve. Spider-Man 2, like its predecessor, is a strictly single-player adventure featuring a mix of free-roam exploration, combat encounters, and cinematic QTE sections.

For instance, Spider-Man 2’s most jaw-dropping trick is that it features instantaneous fast travel — and I really mean instantaneous. When I select any spot on the map and select fast travel, I’m immediately swinging through the streets in a second flat. It’s an unbelievable accomplishment in an open-world game as densely detailed as this and one that takes a lot of the tedium out of late-game exploration. It’s a raw tension that developer Insomniac doesn’t shy away from in the spectacular Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Though it delivers some of the most astonishing action to ever grace a video game, the superhero sequel almost also serves as a deconstruction of its own power fantasy.

Critics highlight its captivating story, compelling characters, and impressive visuals. However, the game’s open-world formula, with occasional pacing issues, feels a bit repetitive to some. The integration of Peter Parker and Miles Morales adds depth to the experience, making it a must-play for superhero fans despite minor shortcomings. Rather than a distraction, the switching dynamic (sometimes dictated by story, and sometimes by player choice) keeps things fresh and often provides exciting cliffhangers or action change-ups at critical moments. The tag-team dynamic is rewarding, and both heroes get the chance to shine.
